Trumped
By Pamarty Venkataramana
‘ Flunked ‘ used to be the most abominable phrase at school.
Today, in 2021 A.D, there’s a newer phrase ,viz, ‘Trumped’.
‘Trumped ‘ is not about trumped-up charges.
Nor is that about blowing one’s own trumpet.
It is more akin to someone cocking a snook at someone who was trying to cock a snook at that someone who has shown his cockiness, well before the smarter one can outsmart this other someone.
It can also mean that the smarter one who is outsmarted is smarting under the blow.
It was a blow to the one who had a head-start in the game of missives and dismissals.
To be ‘trumped’ can also mean ‘to be trounced’ or upped.
In a game of equal ‘unequals’ pitted against unequal ‘equals’, it is the one hollering most that gets ‘trumped’!
The boy who cried wolf is now the ‘wolf-boy’.
The sheep have fled.
Even as an old goat rambles on to the victory – podium.
Trumped.
