Beheading the Barbarians?
By Pamarty Venkataramana
That when Supreme Court leads the way, the Parliament follows suit was well exhibited today with the criminalisation of ‘triple talaq’ practice by Mohammedan men in India who have been taking shelter under the incongruity of absence of an uniform civil code in India.
A draconian and beastly practice which trampled the human rights of Muslim women in the name of Allah. Many Islamic lands abolished it as an inhuman practice. It was the menfolk who chant the name of the Prophet Mohammed that enslaved, subdued and abused the ‘weaker sex’ as being toys at their disposal to be disposed of at whims and fancies of the ‘husband’.
No two words need be said that this legislation is a historic piece of legislation. Apparently and on the face of it meant to uplift the prestige and plight of women who adopted the Muslim faith.
The ban of triple talaq practice to summarily throw a lady out on the streets and abandon her to misfortunes of a tainted uncertain future has been a long overdue one. Many more such foul practices exist and subsist in India which ought to be likewise done away with. Not just the malady of triple talaq but many more could have been addressed by single Bill on uniform Civil Code in this country of unequals.
A footnote to this ode to Indian Parliament cannot but end without a round of applause to the banning of Tippu Jayanthi celebrations by mr.Yediyurappa. Definitely, he’s putting his right foot forward.
Ghosts or long dead and gone men of a bygone era (be it #TippuSultan or #Mohammed) cannot reign in absentia:only a live power elected leader of the day such as #Narendra Modi can call the shots for transformation of India into a #NewIndia .
Of course, there are scholars who are aware of the truth that there was supposed to be a time-gap of a month each before each utterance of the Islamic term -‘talaq’ was uttered by the estranged hubby of a Muslim woman. But then, a civilised society ought not to go into primitive era where illiteracy and unequal gender ratio reigned Supreme.
Judiciary has shown the right way. Legislature has followed the right path. But,would the Executive possess the will to enforce this law in letter and in right earnest ?
