Yours Most Obediently!
By – Pamarty Venkataramana
Exciting times are in for all ‘idle minds’ and eager beaver reformists of ‘societal systems’ as the ‘wheel of Karma’ goes full circle in a Republic where ‘washing linen in public’ has become germane to desi political screen.
It no longer seems shameful for a ‘public servant’ to submit (post event ) in public domain of having served as a ‘submissive accomplice’ to questionable deeds in humble (obedient) submission to political bosses.
‘Public service’.
– it is not a phrase that entices merely students of service jurisprudence or pundits of constitutionalism.
Nowadays, it is bandied about by every bureaucrat, politician, social worker and freelance media folk.
The thin line of ‘equality before the Law and equality of all laws’ has been erased by euphemisms like ‘Freedom of expression’ and the Darwinian theory of ‘might is right’.
‘Survival of the fittest’ has altogether assumed a different meaning with ‘profane’ incidents such as a self-declared anarchist heading a popular Government or a much touted ambitious politician from national opposition camp, coming out with bloopers and grossly horrendous statements, time and again.
Both ‘hidden ambition’ and the other extreme of ‘lack of inhibition to sling mud’ at erstwhile bosses are the two boundaries of communication which gel well with ‘being a deadly cobra’ to ‘being chief of a tourist gang’ style of rhetoric being much publicized by the torch-bearers of ‘public conscience’, the ‘mass-media’.
Idealism. Ambition. Adventure.
All motivated by a sole objective of ‘climbing the social ladder’.
Which are the two crutches used to scale these ‘heights’ of fame?
Media-marketing.
And, Dhobighat syndrome.
The former is an ‘open sesame’ cave to fame. It is a ‘free for all’.
Dhobighat Syndrome?
This is an infectious habit of a bureaucrat kowtowing to political bosses when it suits and later on turn volte face, without flinching an eyelid and throwing back the dirty rags at face of the benefactors in political realm.
Entrenched and corrupt bureaucracy which is not accountable as is the case with elected political class of citizens, must be stripped of its ‘favoured few’ tag.
Is this wisdom of street-smart underlings?
Or, is that an epidemic which must be fought out as you would the Covid virus?
This epidemic of fallen service jurisprudence coupled with a failed criminal justice system must surely be countered.
But, how to undertake the cleansing of stables of extortionists and mafiaso vagabonds in our society?
One foolproof way will be to refresh the pillars of democracy (beginning from the Government) with tides of new leaders with new ideas and untapped energy.
Unless old ‘leaders’ give way to the new ones, ‘Dhobighat syndrome’ will remain the edifice on which odd ideas floated by little qualified druids of mass-media will continue to mistake the cuckoo bird for the crow. And, spread the same wrong assumption to a gullible public.
Political appointees
Bureaucrats, be it civil servants or uniformed ones must not be allowed to make a mockery of constitutional norms.
Honesty and competencies should determine the ability of a person to fit into the structure of governance.
Not ‘servility’.
Adherence versus Obedience.
The wise, the good and the well-born must govern our Nation. Depoliticising administration is a crucial aspect of good governance.
#NewIndia must separate the existing diverse functions of ‘investigation ‘ from ‘law & order’ in the Home Department, across the country.
This alone can help curb, curtail and eventually root out rampant corruption from the most vital Department in the era of #GoodGovernance.
It is high time time to drive out the parasites from the system. By Law.
Tweaking existing laws will fetch the desired results.
May the elected representatives of the billion plus voters say – ‘Yours Most Obediently’!
