Mother Question

Mother Question

Author: Ranganadhan.S

Every mother want their children to become Doctors, Engineers, Scientists or to work in any other highly paid jobs, later should get married to any well settled family girl/boy and the cycle will repeats, that too in an educated family parents ensure that they will fall in above category.

Here is a story which is contrast to above, Tengboche near Khumbu is a region of north-eastern Nepal on the Nepalese side of Mount Everest, there lived poor Sherpa women her name was Dokmo Kinzom. She had 13 children all most all died in their childhood due to some diseases, the 11th boy was very active since his birth. Only means of livelihood  was 25 goats they had. They even didn’t knew what actually education was. Even, since the boy was small, her mother used to send him to rear the goats. As boy was aged only 8, she use to come with him till the raring area which was just below the mountain, this was their routine.

One day, when the boy was at age 10, his mother saw her child watching the mountain instead of looking after the goats, she went to him and asked, What are you looking at?”

Boy replied: “Mom this mountain is too big”.

Mother replied: “Yes son, till today no one climbed it.”

The boy was surprisingly seeing the mountain, by hearing that no one climbed it his surprise was even more high, till her mother asked a thundering question, Dear son, Will you climb it”??

She touched his head and went home. Even this became her routine, coming with son till the base of mountain with 25 goats and pointing to that huge mountain and asking him same question

“Dear son, Will you climb it”??

The boy also learnt mountain climbing through small mountains and later covered almost all big mountains nearby Nepal and India but her mother never stopped her question.

Even though he attempted to climb that mountain nearby his home, he used to fail. It was in 1953, he joined with a New Zealander Edmund Hillary. They worked hard for 7 weeks. Finally their day came at 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953 they were on top of  8,850 m.

The young Sherpa boy had achieved his mother dream at his 40th age while her mother was still alive, the mountain name is Mount Everest and his name was,

Tenzing Norgay

He dedicates his success to his poor mother who was in her peak of happiness when Tenzing_Norgayhe reached top of Everest. He was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, he started Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling and trained thousands of poor mountain climbers, and died there at age of 71 in 1986.

Wow what a mother what a son,

I have seen thousands of educated parents restrict their kid to climb tree, swim in ponds, not play in bright sun, thinking that they may fall or get hurt, all they want is their kid to earn money. But we must salute this poor mother who filled his son with courage, no parents tell their kid to climb Everest because of which even kids won’t climb it and won’t reserve their name in pages of history.

Dear friends! It’s not too late, let us give quality education, help in their career, but let’s also encourage and fill confidence in them in doing a great triumph which can add them in pages of history..

Finally we can end with lines of Tenzing after his success,

“It has been a long road …

From a mountain slave, a bearer of loads, to a wearer of a coat with rows of medals who is carried about in planes and worries about income tax.”

  3. Parents are first school of their offspring. Impart the best of life in your child nd see how he excels.Good motivation for Parents. Excellent crux points .Youngistaan.Ranganandan.

  4. Very inspiring article. Even now there are parents who take their son/daughter to tennis, barathnatyam, karethe etc classes. Now parent’s are over protective because the situation is not good n safe for children to leave them alone to play with their friends. So much kidnapping n other things are happening. Why parents tell to take up a good career and earn more means if a individual grows in life, country also develops. Patents should support in whatever field kids are interested and encourage them to grow. Money also plays important role in ones life. Well written article by the author.

  5. Yes, Parents need to be the fountainhead for their children. A good post respresenting a sherpa woman who gave her son a will, determination and inspiration to climb Mount Everest I.e to achieve something big in life. Ranganadhan ji Thank you.
