Mohan Singh was born on 15 August 1898 in Bhaun in Punjab. After partition Bahun became a part of Pakistan. When Mohan Singh was 6 months old his father died. He completed his preliminary education in Rawalpindi, he passed the Intermediate College Examination in Lahore. Poverty was at its peak in family which made him to discontinue his education, by that time a huge Plague in Lahore made him to leave Lahore and migrate to Amritsar and later to Shimla in seek of Job in 1922 with Rs.0 in his pocket.
As Mohan Singh had knowledge about shorthand and typewriting he got a small job in a hotel named The Cecil for Rs.50, He was working there as a bellboy Mohan was very active in his work, he was doing all the work enthusiastically, by that time Shimla was summer hub of Britishers, because of which many hotels business was at top those days. By his hard work Mohan Singh became close to his owner Clarke, Clarke decided to buy The Carlton Hotel, Mohan played important role in buying and managing the new hotel which was renamed as Hotel Clarke.
Along with his work Mohan started to learn about managing hotel by that time his salary was increased to Rs.100, on one side Mohan got married on other side he started to work still hard to get extra penny and to save it. 10 years went like this, one fine day his hotel owner Mr. Clarke decided to sell Hotel Clarke, Mohan thought to buy it, he counted his entire savings but it was too less, so he decided to sell all the ornaments in his home and the money fell just short than the buying price, so he had no other option left. His wife gave her Mangalasutr and directed him to sell it and buy the hotel, finally the deal was successful, he bought the hotel in 1934.
The rest is history his full name is Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi, and his small seed today has grown into a huge tree today it is famous as Oberoi Group which operates 30 hotels and three cruisers in five countries. The net worth of the hotel may be around $545 million, The Group employs more than 12,000 people.
It is really an inspirational story of a Legend, in his interview in his last days reporter asked, “You were very poor in your childhood, now you have all luxury around you, which is your happiest part”??
He replied: “I was very happier when I was poor, I didn’t know difficulties as my dear wife, and children were along with me. Now my wife left me, one of my son died in accident and other expired due to Asthama, my other son is busy looking after my business i could see him once in a year. Now I am all alone”
How true friends, all we aim for money but real happiness cannot be bought with money. No doubt that Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi inspired world through his hard work and he also taught the other face of money which is much dangerous he died at the age of 103.
Let’s work hard, earn money but meanwhile will love and spend our valuable moments of life with our dear ones..
To end with saying of Oberoi..
“I have been able to accept the challenge and make good. There is comfort in knowing that whatever little I have achieved has also helped to raise the prestige of my country.”
