Bhaskara also known as Bhaskaracharya ( acharya means teacher) was born in 1114 in Vijjadavida ( Bijapur of Karnataka). Bhaskara was great mathematician and an astrologer world seen, he was first to work on differential calculus much before Newton and Leibniz found but his inventions were not recorded..
His main work Siddhanta Shiromani which he divided into four parts called Lilavati, Bijaganita ,Grahaganita and Golādhyaya. These four sections dealt with arithmetic, algebra, mathematics of the planets, and spheres respectively. He also wrote another treatise named Karana Kautoohala.

Not going much into details of his mathematical achievement let me straightaway start a beautiful incidence in his life which shows knowledge Indian astrologers had..
Bhaskara’s wife delivered a baby girl, they named them Lilavati. Lilavati was a very intelligent and good looking since her childhood.
Bhaskara was apprehensive about his daughter’s questioning and curiosity. Even since her childhood she used to ask her father many questions regarding mathematics and used to solve puzzles given by her father.
Days passed, years passed, she grew up, and she reached age of marriage, Bhaskara decided to get Lilavati married. As he was an astrologer he decided to check Lilavati’s horoscope. He had shocking News as he had found that Lilavati would not have a happy married life if she did not get married at a particular auspicious time.
He did not tell Lilavati about this, as he thought it would hurt his daughter. He made all arrangements to ensure that Lilavati would get married at the auspicious time. In order to make sure that he did not miss this particular time, he kept a cup with a small hole at the bottom of a vessel filled with water, arranged so that the cup would sink at the beginning of the destined auspicious hour. He had also warned Lilavati not to go near the vessel.
When Bhaskara was not at home, Lilavati could not stop her curiosity and went to see what her father had hidden.
When Lilavati went close to the device, she bent forward to get a closer look. A little pearl from her nose ring fell into the water. She rushed back in a hurry so that her father would not find out what she did. The little pearl that fell into the water upset the calculations made by Bhaskara and the wedding took place, but not at the auspicious hour.
As guessed by Bhaskaracharya, Lilavati’s husband died a few days after the marriage. Bhaskara brought back his widowed daughter to his residence and decided to take care of her.
Lilavati could not come out of shock she had lost her charm. She had lost her interest in all activities. She sat by the pond looking into nothingness and used to cry.
Bhaskara was very upset to see changes in his beautiful daughter,
He thought of a way to get her out of her depressed state. He started to create new arithmetic problems framed in a way taking things around her and asked Lilavati to solve puzzle. As Lilavati was brilliant girl she used to solve all the problems posed to her.
Gradually she came out of her depression and led her life happily. Bhaskaracharya took these problems and written book named after Lilavati.
The problems Lilavati had solved was soo difficult even many mathematicians today fails to solve it, she had solved those puzzles even before pythagoras found his formula..

One eight and one ninth of one eighth were sporting in a pond full of lotuses
