Anuj Nayyar was born on August 28, 1975 in Delhi, when his father S.K. Nayyar worked as a visiting professor in Delhi School of Economics, while his mother Meena Nayyar worked for the South Campus library of Delhi University.
Anuj Nayyar received his high-school education from Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan in New Delhi. Since his schooling days Anuj was most notorious student in his class. Even though he was a brilliant child, tired of his regular mischief, his teacher had once written on the notice board,
‘I want Anuj – dead or alive’!”
He was very good volleyball player in his schooling days, once while playing he ruined his shirt then parents used to tell him not to play because of it, since then he used to remove his shirt and play.
Then they told him, his vest was getting dirty so he should not play the game, but then he used to remove even his vest too and played!
This dedication of boy laid foundation for his dream of serving mother India. When Anuj was studying class 10, he met with an accident where muscles of his leg were torn completely from the knee to the toe, he had severe wound. For his misfortune anaesthetist was on leave that day, but at the age of 16, Anuj went through 22 stitches without anaesthetist.
After stitches when his father asked he controlled pain, he replied
“Pain lies in the brain not in the leg.”
Anuj joined NDA and graduated from there (90th course) and later was commissioned into the 17th Battalion Jat Regiment in June 1997 from the Indian Military Academy.
In 1999 Pakistani military and paramilitary forces cowardly entered Kargil region of Jammu and Kashmir.The army quickly fielded its troop to drive out the Pakistani infiltrators from India. Anuj Nayyar was junior commander in the 17 Jat Regiment he was one of the more than 500,000 Indian soldiers deployed for that mission.
The aim of the operation was to capture “Tiger hills” which was captured by Pakistan army. It was not an easy task for any army to directly re-capture a hill which was completely captured by opposition troop. Indian Army made a strategic plan of capturing “Pt. 4875” also called as Pimple II, a mountain peak 15,990 feet above sea level and was on the western side of Tiger Hill which was occupied by Pakistani infiltrators.
Indian Army made a team and started towards capturing Pt. 4875 unknowing that Pakistanis had also captured Pt. 4875.During the initial phase of attack on Pt. 4875, the Commander of Indian platoon was injured. After the initial setback, the team decided to split into two groups, one led by Captain Vikram Batra and other by Capt. Anuj Nayyar.

Capt. Anuj Nayyar team consisted of 7 people; they had a goal of destroying 4 Pakistani bunkers. As the peak was too high top officials thought it was impossible to attack without Ariel support but due to unfavourable weather IAF failed to help Army. Anuj decided to move his team towards goal,Under Captain Nayyar’s leadership, the company had successfully cleared three of the four bunkers and began its assault on the last remaining bunker. While clearing the fourth bunker, an enemy rocket propelled grenade fell directly on Nayyar. Despite being grievously injured, Nayyar continued to lead the remaining men in his company. He succumbed to his injuries but not before clearing the last bunker on Pt. 4875. Anuj alone killed 9 Pakistani soldiers. Anuj and his entire team lost their lives in the battle..
Anuj was one of true son of mother India. During the war whenever he captured one of the enemy, he would write down their names, names of their villages and parents on a piece of paper; he took their palm impressions on it and then slit their throats.
Once when a reporter asked Anuj why he joined Army he said
‘I wanted to see Siachen and to see who is stronger, me or Siachen’.
Apart from this his love story is also touch our heart, he loved Simran, she had presented him a ring as a token of love, but while going to capture Pt. 4875 Anuj had given that ring to his higher officer to keep safely, if in case he fail to return alive he had asked him to hand it over to his fiancée Simran.
For the sacrifice Capt. Anuj Nayyar made for the country he was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
In 2003, Hindi movie named “Dhoop” was made keeping the story of Anuj Nayyar.
Tejbir Singh, a fellow soldier of the Jat Regiment, named his son Anuj in honour of Captain Nayyar.
