Is there any moment which made your life satisfactory?

KalamAvul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, usually referred as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, is known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ for his work on development of ballistic missiles and space rocket technology. Abdul kalam has honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions. He has been awarded the coveted civilian awards – Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (1997). He served as President of India too. Kalam thinks children as future of the country.

Once he was in an award function, there were lots of media people in that function, after completion of his speech a reporter asked him a question; “Tell us an moment which made you feel that your life is worthy and satisfactory”

Everyone started to think which incident he may refer as best. Some thought he may quote getting Bharat Ratna made his life satisfactory. Some thought getting 30 doctorates as his best part of life. Some thought he may refer about successful launching of AGNI and POKHRAN missile.

But Abdul kalam referred to an incident none of the crowd expected, he said;

“Once I was in Hyderabad’s Nizam’s hospital. I visited polio affected kids section with Doctors. Polio affected kids won’t have strength in their legs. To help them walk they will be wearing a metal calipers to their legs, usually those calipers will be of 3.5kg. When I visited them all were dragging their legs with much difficulty as it was too heavy for small kids to carry that weight. Doctors asked me Sir is there any way to remove the pain of these small kids.

I straight away went to ISRO laboratory. I explained this problem with all my engineers. We all worked for 3 weeks without sleep & finally we found a material which we use in manufacturing of Rocket. The new material was much stronger than metal and weighed only 300 grams. We manufactured calipers using the new material. I again went to Nizam hospital with these new calipers and asked kids to wear it. All kids worn it and started walking fast & easily as it was only 300 gms. Seeing their kids happy, all parents started to shed tears. Doctors’ eyes were also wet seeing small children playing happily. Seeing tears in everyone’s eyes, I too started crying. I think that moment made my life satisfactory and worthy”

As soon as Kalam finished this incident entire crowd stood up, many people including reporter’s eyes were wet, Whenever I remember this incident even my eyes go wet.

“One may get thousand awards, Doctorates, money, title’s in life but our life will be satisfactory only if we help others”.

Finally, “Is there any moment which made your life satisfactory??”

  9. Kalam Sir always loved helping and serving others. I have no words for Kalam Sir’s greatness except “a thousand Salutes”. 11. I helped many people in my life. I cant narrate. But one incident in my life gave immense satisfaction. I was in my second form. (Now seventh class) Our English teacher gave 20 word dictation. He told that for each mistake he would cane the student once. I committed two mistakes. The teacher was stunned as I never did commit mistakes. So he told the class “Chandra never commit mistakes. I can not beat him. If any student is ready to take the two canes for him, I will spare him.” One Sambaiah who was lame with polio stood up and said ” Teacher. I committed 20 mistakes. So I get 20 canes. Another two will not add to my pain. I will take them.” The teacher spared the entire class of caning and said “Sacrifice is what Sambaiah showed today. Learn from him.” Alas! Sambaiah, being very poor, discontinued studies and joined a rice mill as daily labourer.

    Still I feel his was supreme sacrifice at a very young age. May God bless him with long life. Must be old like me.
