A couple of weeks ago, Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, made a controversial statement, yet again. Addressing a public rally, Manjhi said “Upper castes were foreigners and descendants of Aryan invaders, while the true Indians were the Dalits and the indigenous people.” The comments coming from a politician, who seems to have bitten more than he can chew and suffering from “Foot-In-The-Mouth” disease of the worst kind, would have been dismissed as yet another antic from the newly appointed Chief Minister trying to grab media attention. But, recent spate of news reports emanating from liberals and outrage in media seem to suggest that there is more to it than meets the eye. Consider this:

Why is representation of Indian history in school text books such a contentious issue that it always engenders extreme reaction from liberals and Left-Leaning intelligentsia? The answer, perhaps, lies in the baggage handed down by departing British and its legacy carried on by the successive Congress regimes. Prior to British rule in India, very few Indians were either aware of or believed in Aryan invasion theory (AIT). It is the Western Indologists who started the ethnic and cultural divide by promoting the hypothesis that Aryans were alien to India, invaded the sub-continent and colonised it by conquering and dominating the original inhabitants – Dravidans. This premise was sought to be rationalised on the distinct identities of the two races – light skinned Aryans and dark skinned Dravidans. It served the British colonialists in justifying its occupation of India (If alien Aryans can invade India, why couldn’t the Europeans!) and keeping the ethnic fire burning between the so called Aryans and Dravidans so as to ensure they were never united. Islamic rulers, who occupied large parts of Indian sub-continent when British rulers came, became eager accomplices in AIT as it justified their own invasion of India. After independence, Prime Minister Nehru commissioned left-leaning historians like Romila Thapar, Bipin Chandra, Prof Irfan Habib and others of their ilk to write history text books. All these historian were highly acclaimed, but deeply steeped in the western worldview, carried on the British legacy of AIT. Egged-on by a secular and agnostic Nehru, Indian historians, many of them Marxists who had only contempt for Hindu religion and its culture, retained the history written by colonial masters. Hindu organisations like RSS, deeply hurt by the content and interpretation of the text books, have been challenging the AIT on the grounds that there is no scientific or cultural basis for the idea of Aryan-Dravidan divide. Attempts have been made in past to correct the representation of Indian history – once in 1977 (when Jan Sangh was part of the Janata Party alliance) and again during NDA’s rule in 1999-2004 (when Murli Manohar Joshi was HRD Minister). While the former attempt failed as Jan Sangh was a small part of the ruling Janata party dominated by Congress party’s erstwhile members, the latter attempt was partially successful. But, as soon as the new government headed by Congress returned to power in 2004, all the changes carried out during NDA rule were reversed. There has also been a subterranean campaign by Left-leaning historians to call Hindu epics of Mahabharata and Ramayana as works of fiction. However, Prof. Y.Sudarshan Rao, a highly acclaimed historian and recently appointed Chairman of Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR) has debunked the theory of calling these epics as myths. In a recent interview , Prof. Rao, commenting on AIT, said “Aryans are called outsiders only by colonial and Marxist writers. We have evidence that points to indigenous origin of Aryans. Scholars in India have been aware of it, but are they (Marxist historians) ready to accept it?”
For history of the Vedic period, post-independence historians depended to a large extent on the works crafted by Western historians. As for the history of medieval period, their job was made easier by active patronage from politicians of the ruling party. Beginning with Nehru, who had scant regard for Hindu culture, Congress party which enjoyed uninterrupted power for almost 50 years after independence and during whose reign secularism degenerated to Minority appeasement, history of medieval India was misrepresented to suit the political agenda of the ruling party. In a letter to his daughter Indira, Nehru wrote “…Mahmud was hardly a religious man; that he was a Mohammedan of course, but that was by the way and Mahmud would have done what he did to whatever religion he might have belonged…” Thus, reference to forced conversion of Hindus and atrocities perpetrated by Muslim tyrants were diluted and quite often enigmatic; treatment of Hindus as second class citizens and forced payment of Jiziya tax were conveniently skipped in several instances. Instead, focus was placed on the positive side of Muslim regimes and legitimise their invasion. India’s medieval history, as represented in NCERT text books, is in fact, a history of Muslim invaders, their lifestyle, various wars they waged against Hindu rulers and romantic tales (often fictitious) of their Harems, with little or no reference to Hindu rulers. Maharana Pratap, one on the greatest Hindu rulers of 16th century and who exemplifies bravery, finds little mention. Last week, social media paid glowing tributes to another brave son – Lachit Barphukan, a commander in the Ahom kingdom of Assam, who valiantly fought against Mughal forces. Lachit finds no mention in history text books and sadly, most school children are completely ignorant of this braveheart. Similarly, Tipu Sultan, a bigot who ruled Mysore during 18th century and responsible for destruction of many Hindu temples and forced conversion was regarded as embodiment of secularism.
Is there a need to revise Indian history for next generation of school children? Pulitzer Prize winning historian James McPherson wrote: History is a continuing dialogue between the present and the past. Interpretations of the past are subject to change in response to new evidence, new questions asked of the evidence, new perspectives gained by the passage of time” Prof. Rao says that historian should have a scientific temper and not swayed by emotions or political ideology. But, despite empirically verifiable evidence available against AIT, most historians have denied it. Similarly, denial of systematic genocide of Hindus by successive Islamic rulers is disingenuous and can hardly be termed as revision of history. Young students are taught history not only to inspire them to develop a sense of historical consciousness, but also to infuse in them a spirit of nationalism. Has the cabal of Marxist historians and social-scientists wondered about the collateral damage a distorted history which glorified Islamic rulers may have caused to a section of society? Is it not likely that medieval history of India, as taught presently and more particularly the glorified account of Islamic rulers in history books could well be a major factor why a large section of Muslims is still rooted in past and refuse to join the mainstream of a rapidly advancing India? There is no denying that history has always been a controversial and contentious subject and historians should bear in mind that students have a right to know the correct history, including the detailed narrative of “warts and all”.
