Hi Tech and Job bug
By – Pamarty Venkataramana
Modernity has brought with it rapid changes in societal mores as well as human lifestyles. Even as cheerleaders have applauded the ease of connectivity and doing commerce with hi-tech gadgets starting from the ubiquitous computer, there exists a huge lobby wailing about loss of jobs for real human beings pointing out repeatedly that machines have taken over mankind.
But, what exactly is the cause for unemplyment levels rising high with every innovation of techology?
Is it cut-throat competition between artificial intelligence techniques and normal human minds?
Or,is it faulty policy-making coupled with a poor record of implementing such progressive policies aimed at balancing the loss of jobs with increased economic activity?
Truth is not far to seek. Inflation of money has risen even as newer technologies are embraced by society, from time to time.
Studies undertaken to examine the effects of new technologies being adopted by industrial sector, both manufacturing as well as service sector have divulged the fact that higher technologies create a greater number of jobs. Output is increased and so can the per-capita income as well as the gross domestic product raise the bar of national income.
However, owing to a host of extraneous factors including lack of adequate power supply, growing lethargy among human beings in the smartphone-era, not all skilled and semi-skilled people are able to secure a job commensurate with educational qualifications or work-experience.
To attain a job is not to aim for either a cosy government job nor jump on to the seemingly plush corporate sector job.Nor is it real success to join the brain drain wagon. Even more not so appropriate is for all and sundry youths to declare start-up business without possessing either capital nor adequate knowledge of the environment governing any such given activity.
Frustration and dejection often times lead to loss of not only valuable human resources but also precious lives. Hence,it is of utmost importance to lay down a path best suited to each one and to not join the herd mentality. Do not compare,do not compete.
There are ample avenues available for every individual wanting to be gainfully employed as long as it is not riddled with bias, prejudice or self-doubts. More importantly,it is essential for youngsters and raw hands just stepping out of colleges or university level of qualification to have proper guidance from parents or better well wishers with wisdom instead of falling prey to peer-pressures.
Life is a very serious business and misguided missiles in a war zone might do instant damage but faulty moves of a fresh passout can demolish self-confidence as well as destroy a capable being from flourishing in career path.
As pivotal a role is played by enticements and allurements offered to freshers in guise of internships and campus placements which resemble instances of young women being called to a certain foreign land to be ordained as nuns but eventually ending up as maidservants mopping floors of their newfound bosses.
Stark realities ought not to be thrown below the carpet. Only then can the perennial problem of unemployment eies vis a vis education ladder be addressed properly and without it ending up as a self-defeating exercise.
A thought brandished whilst viewing overall growth of society would be return to a more sensible society where those who do not need to strain and undergo daily tribulations of commuting up and down to eke a livelihood abstain themselves from undergoing such a fancied job and serve mentality. A few moments of contemplation would enable all to grasp the finer sense of such a new movement whereby those in real need to sustain will bag employment and those who desist from temptation of money bags will be leading happy and longer, qualitative lives. The happiness-quotient of a country is as key a determinant as it’s oer capita income.
There are those who pooh-pooh any idea that seeks to restore sanity and list civilization of mankind after advent of industrial revolutions, one after another technology replacing the former. But,it is the law of Nature to erase all unsavoury growth,be it personal or societal.
Work versus labour. Manual versus robotic. Mechanical versus systematic. Application of mind versus apps on phone. Artificial intelligence versus human brain. Single job or multiple works. An orderly life versus a crazy rat race. Peace or piecemeal lifestyle.
Such are the options.A Hobson’s choice ?
Let us ponder.
