Daniel Mark Lewin(Danny) was born on May 14, 1970 in Denver, Colorado and raised in Israel. After finishing his basic education he joined Defence and he served for four years in the Israel Defence Forces as an officer in Sayeret Matkal, which was one of special unit in Israel Defence. Lewin earned the rank of captain.
He joined Technion – Israel Institute of Technology to earn his technical certification, even during the time of his studies he used to work in IBM to develop a system for them called Genesys system, a processor verification tool that is used widely within IBM even today.
After his technical certification he received a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, in 1995. Later he traveled to begin graduate studies toward a Ph.D at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1996.There he got a guide namely Professor F. Thomson Leighton as both were workaholic both became good friends within few days. Danny got married to Anne and got 2 sons namely, Eitan and Itamar .
During their research once Danny said to Thomson, “The internet today is nothing, in few years the information in internet will be so huge that even existing server cannot hold it”
By knowing this both worked for months and came up with innovative algorithms for optimizing Internet traffic, and they together founded new company and named it Akamai Technologies in 1998.
Lewin started his career as the company’s chief technology officer and a board member, and his dream was not false, internet emerged like anything, name and fame was at his door. He was named one of the most influential figures of the Internet age.
Just before 8 a.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 11 took off from Boston’s Logan Airport the destiny was Los Angeles. The plane was partially full of 81 passengers, nine crewmembers, and two pilots. Many of its passengers were travelling for work on the daily scheduled flight including Danny Lewin who wanted to travel to Los Angeles.
The plane started to travel west and held on course for 16 minutes until it passed Worcester, Mass. Then, instead of taking a turn in south direction, it swung to the north and failed to climb to its target altitude. By this time, the flight 11 was hijacked. Five terrorists, all of them wielding box cutters and knives, commandeered the plane and steered it into New York airspace.
Soon after seeing terrorists attacking his flight he saw 2 of them rushing towards pilot, Danny’s eyes got Red, Captain within him came out, He used his tactics and dragged one of him silently and made him fall down and held is neck firmly but because of the silence in flight his action made a noise, a terrorist named Satam al-Suqami shot and killed Lewin with a single bullet around at 8.15 to 8.20am. And the plane crashed at 8:46 am hitting to World trade centre by taking life of 3000 odd innocents.
LEWIN became The First Victim of Sept.11. America proudly remembers his bravery, most of them still can’t speak about him without choking back tears for the buoyant, brilliant computer scientist who changed their lives and inspired them never to fall behind ,American Govt named the Circle next to Cambridge as LEWIN circle in his memory.
Dear friends, Danny life is an inspiration for all of us, how one should show braveness even knowing his death is near. This incidence also shows us and our Govt how to remember our Martyrs.
Friends Now please think who the first soldier who died in Kargil war. No most of us don’t know and some of them don’t even want to know. We still have circles, buildings, roads and even toilets in the name of our corrupt politicians. Let us try to be brave as Danny and Let us also spend some time in knowing the name of Indian Martyrs.
