Is Banning Jallikattu a Misplaced Activism?

JallikattuToday TOI has published an editorial “Misplaced Activism” in favor of Jallikattu tradition. Of course, there may be many opinions on any subject. Some people may speak for and some may against. But as the society progresses, one must re-examine the traditions in modern reference and context. And if that tradition fails in modern concept, one must be ready to rectify or leave that tradition all together, even if that tradition is being followed be masses.

Jallikutta is such a tradition which is being followed by masses since ages. I don’t know in which context this tradition was followed in old age but the arguments extended by supports, is not convincing to me. These arguments have not convinced the Supreme Court either.

The main arguments given by supporters is “Jallikattu is an event where the best bulls are displayed and the ones that win are sought for breeding by farmers.” But now we have better & scientific ways to improve “breeding.” In fact we have to import better bulls from foreign lands for “breeding in India.” Why to following such tradition where even the life of people present is in danger? So the main argument falls flat.

The second argument, that “the jallikattu ban is hardly enforceable as benign cultural practices enjoying widespread support can’t be curbed through fiat. In fact, the issue has seen Tamil Nadu’s rival political parties AIADMK and DMK both oppose the ban”, covers no ground. Please remember once Sati-Pratha had mass support. The Kings & Raja including ordinary Janata followed “Sati-Prath” with religious zeal. But we had to shun it on the humanitarian ground. We, the Hindus, are proud of disband this barbaric tradition.

The third argument that “Muslims are allowed to perform “Barkrid” where thousand goats plus bulls & cows are saltered mercilessly, then Hindus should be allowed to Jallikatti”. Yes killing cows, bulls & goats for performing religious reasons is a barbaric act. Hindus & other sects too follow such traditions. In fact, the Honorable Supreme Court must take note of it and ban all such killing & torturing animals in the name of religious practice. This type of act is a black mark on human culture. Personally I am in favor of disallowing even having pets too which is nothing but another form of slavery.

I am in favor of banning not Jallikattu & all such traditions and appeal all reads of YugVani to support this cause.
